SAWF COVID-19 Update

Having taken cognisance of the outbreak and spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) at international and national level, the SAWF Executive Management is concerned about the health and safety of its own members. As a National Sport Federation, we have a responsibility to protect and act in the best interest of all our members including members of the public who support and attend wrestling activities and events at all levels within the Federation.

It is our firm believe that everyone can and should contribute to preventing and slowing down the spread of Covid-19 and we as a National Sport Federation have a critical role to play in this regard.

The SAWF Executive Management is constant communication with the relevant advisory institutions and experts. Although we haven’t received official communication and guidelines from the Department of Sport and Recreation in this regard as yet, it is clear from the statement of President Cyril Ramaphosa, declaring a National State of Disaster, prohibiting gatherings of more than 100 people, with immediate effect.

It is for this reason that the SAWF Executive Management has taken the decision to cancel and/ or possibly postpone all upcoming wrestling events at all levels within the SAWF, where more than 100 persons will attend including, participants, coaches, spectators and officials, with immediate effect until further notice.

The SAWF Executive Management will continue to monitor the situation and will inform the wrestling community of any changes, if and when the situation changes.

In the meantime, we want to assist wrestling associations and clubs by providing reliable information with regards to the prevention, spreading and treatment of persons infected with the virus. Important information and advice will be made available on the SAWF webpage and Facebook page to assist associations and clubs in deciding on the most appropriate measures to be taken in this regard.

Advice received from medical doctors within the sporting fraternity points to the higher risk of transmitting the disease in contact sports, this doesn’t only affect wrestlers but coaches and officials due to close contact during matches and training sessions, we therefore urge all parties to act in the best interest of all their members.

We wish all our athletes, coaches, officials and parents well during these trying times and pray that we all be kept safe and remain healthy.  As we receive more information we will communicate immediately to all concerned.
